Fuji DX-100

FujiFilm Frontier-S DX100

UPDATE January 27, 2014 – We have received more information recently on this new printer from Fuji. The Frontier-S DX100 is expected to have a street price of around $3,500. Estimated cost per print for ink and paper is $0.006 per square inch. Fuji is expected to start shipping the DX100 in April 2014. Stay tuned for more info.
Officially announced on Septemer 9, 2013, the new Fuji Frontier-S DX100 has me wondering – is this the game changing high-speed, high-volume inkjet printer that some have predicted and many have asked for? We are not sure yet as information is preliminary but the new Fuji Frontier-S DX100 looks very interesting for those that produce high volume 8×10, 6×8, 4×8, 5×7 or 4×6 prints. According to FujiFilm USA:
“The Frontier-S DX100 enables high-quality printing with a wide color gamut, sharp detail, smooth gradation and deep blacks by utilizing the exclusive combination of FUJIFILM Quality Dry Photo Paper for DX100, and the six Fujifilm VIVIDIATM ink system. When combined with Fujifilm’s innovative Image Intelligence™ image processing technology it’s a compact yet powerful printer design. The Frontier-S DX100 can produce a 4”× 6” print in 10 seconds (using 6” paper and standard mode) and supports various print sizes from 3.5”x 5” up to 8” x 39” for ultimate flexibility. The Frontier-S DX100 meets the diverse needs and challenges of the retail minilab, retail kiosk and Event photography.”
Event photography? Very interesting. No public information on the all important cost per print as of yet but at 360 4×6 prints per hour the speed is competitive and imagine being able to print on a true luster paper. And for the 8×10 market, inkjet is bound to offer a less expensive cost/print with the flexibility of different sized papers and panoramas. Also, consider the ability to offer a 4×8, 6×8 or 8×10 all from the same machine without changing paper. We have already had one customer propose to build the first photo booth to offer 8″ x “24 Jumbo Photo Strips. Well, I don’t know if that will fly, but this printer is something to keep an eye on.
